Guy Bourdin: Image Maker Exhibition at Somerset House

Guy Bourdin is a French photographer born in Paris, 1928. He is known for his provocative fashion images and pictorials in Vogue Paris during the 1970s and for his advertisements for Charles Jourdan shoes.  Bourdin has an unmistakable signature style, which has inspired many people within the industry including myself.
When visiting the exhibition; Guy Bourdin: Image Maker at Somerset House, it reminded me why I had studied him so many times. At least five of his photographs have been featured within my sketchbook research during University. I studied his use of red, his poses and his leg photos (Charles Jourdan shoes campaigns).

His images are characterized by his use of lighting, composition and bright colours.
The exhibition featured over 200 works with previously unseen material from 1955 to 1987 including films, paintings, preparatory work (Polaroids, sketches and notebooks). It is the largest UK exhibition of his work to date.

In 1950 Bourdin met Man Ray (surrealist), and became his protege.
An editor of Vogue magazine introduced Bourdin to shoe designer Charles Jourdan, Bourdin shot Jourdan's ad campaigns between 1967 and 1981.

"A pair of mannequin legs, cut off just below the knee, she is only a hint of a woman and yet in each situation Bourdin placed her she becomes a complete character within a story, told around many iconic British landmarks."

I feel very inspired, I purchased a book from the souvenir shop and a postcard. I look forward to trying out my own ideas.

Festive Fun: Winter Festival at Southbank London

Yesterday I went to London for a festive day out with family. We went to the Winter Festival at Southbank Centre in London.

The Christmas market is filled with beautiful smells of food including cheese, sausages, chocolates, hot drinks.....and much more! There was so much choice, I didn't know what to have but after trying a few free tasters of cheese and chocolate I decided to have a halloumi cheese wrap which comes with hummus, lettuce and fresh tomato.

We walked up the stairs and along to the typical Christmas market stalls. I knew the Rekorderlig Cider Lodge was there so I was eager to find it as I'd heard it was worth a visit.

I ordered a Hot Winter Cider, served with a slice of orange. It came in a cute mug, you pay a £2 deposit for the mug that you get back when you return the mug. Mmmm......it was good, it warmed me up, it smelt like Christmas. Being in the lodge with a warm cider also felt like skiing, I imagined I was at the top of a mountain minus the ski boots! As someone who isn't the biggest fan of cider I thought it was great. However, when I got to bottom of the mug it was very sweet, but that is just my opinion!
Outside the lodge there was a Christmas tree maze, it looked good fun. We looked round the rest of the stalls.
Macmillan Charity had a huge Christmas tree, you could make a donation and write a message to hang on the tree. The man told me that they have raised £10,000 so far from this simple yet fantastic idea.
The festive fun continued at Somerset House, the beautiful tree, ice skating and Fortnum & Mason Christmas market.

The main reason for going to Somerset House was to see photographer Guy Bourdin exhibition. See my next post "Guy Bourdin: Image Maker" for all the details.
Covent Garden was our next stop, real reindeer & a browse through the shops and stalls.

Here are some snaps from the day.....

Clothes Show Live 2014

On Saturday 6th December for my birthday weekend I went to Clothes Show Live at the NEC, Birmingham with a couple of friends.

I'm going to keep this brief so I can just show you photos instead.

After collecting our goodie bags, we watched the Graduate Image Catwalk show in association with Company magazine presented by a lovely lady and Made in Chelsea celebrity Jamie Laing.

On route to the Manhattan Lambrini bar (for a cheeky Lambrini cocktail) we noticed that vlogger, Youtuber Alfie Deyes (Pointlessblog) was signing his new book and posing for photos!

At the ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fashion Theatre, we watched New York come to Birmingham for the catwalk show. Over 40 models, dancers, presenters, music acts and celebrities. Presented by Rick Edwards and Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh introduced her clothing collection. Millie strutted down the catwalk with a couple of models showing off her collection.

The show was full of colour, action, energy, music, fun and beautiful women and topless men!

Enjoy the photos below...It's been so hard to choose which photos to include, as typical me I have snapped away, here are a few selected at random from the day.

Victoria's Secret Show 2014

Victoria's Secret show arrives in London! The moment we fashion conscious Londoners have been waiting for (finally).

Yes! I have to go, no question about it, how do I get a ticket? ...Oh...£10,000 a ticket plus extra for the VIP experience. I tried to think of ways to get in, hmm.....I'm not sure I'd get past those security guards though!

Instead I took to social media for live updates and waited for the photos to be revealed. The show took place last night at Earls Court in London.

Taylor Swift, Adriana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Hozier performed at the show. Taylor and Adriana looked stunning in lingerie outfits too.

Highlight of the show is the Fantasy bra and everyone is excited for the reveal of who will wear it. This year featured two Fantasy bras worn by Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio who combined have been Angels for nearly 25 years. The Fantasy bras feature 16,000 rubies, diamonds and sapphires strung together with 18k gold. Ed Sheeran sang "Thinking Out Loud" whilst the models walked down in capes of blue and red.
I just wish I had been there to witness the magic of this stunning show.
